Dog and Cat Fur

The production and trade in dog and cat fur is banned throughout the European Union.

The new regulations give Trading Standards the authority to investigate, seize and forfeit such goods should they be found on sale anywhere in Europe.

Thankfully, no cat or dog fur has been found on sale in the UK but the UK is an important trading post for the fur trade so these products were undoubtedly entering and leaving the country.  Cat and dog fur had been found on sale in other EU countries in products ranging from soft toys to fur trims on boots and jackets.

An estimated 2 million cat and dogs are killed for their fur in China each year in horrific conditions.  The highlighting of this issue in the European parliament by organisations including Respect for Animals lead to the introduction of the ban.   This legislation is very important and warmly received by all those who have campaigned hard for it.  The trade in dog and cat fur is also banned in the USA.
