The quota for this year’s hunt off the east coast of Canada had been set at 338,000 but has now closed and official figures show that 70,000 seals were in fact killed. Fishermen in Newfoundland and Labrador, eastern Canada, took some 70,000 seals. The fishermen taking part in the hunt blame a drastic fall in pelt prices brought about by the (then) impending European Union ban on seal products which was passed on 5 May and is expected to come into effect in October.

A bill to ban the farming of fox in Denmark was passed on 29 May 2009. The legislation cites on moral grounds as it was deemed impossible to meet the welfare needs of foxes in factory farm conditions.

Respect for Animals Welcomes Historic Legislation
Strasbourg, 5 May 2009 - Today the European Parliament voted by a large majority to ban the placing on the market of seal products throughout the 27 countries of the EU.

The European Council as backed a proposal for on a ban on the trade in seal products in the European Union to be presented to Members of the European Parliament for adoption on 5 May.

Paul McCartney signalled his full support for an end to the cruel trade in seal products, by adding his name to the http://www.BanSealTrade.eu petition. Organised by Humane Society International UK and Respect for Animals, the petition calls on Members of the European Parliament to adopt a full trade ban.
