The commercial hunt of Harp seals in Canada sis due to start 30 minutes before dawn tomorrow (Friday 28 March 2008). However, at the time of writing, Department of Fisheries and Oceans officials have refused to confirm they will issue permits to observers to document the killing for the opening day of the hunt.

Weeks before the start of the Canadian seal hunt, the largest and most brutal marine mammal hunt in the world, the Canadian government has announced (Monday 10 March) that up to 275,000 seal pups can be clubbed and shot to death during this year’s hunt.

Alison Steadman visited a seal pup nursery on the ice floes off Canada’s east coast today (Monday 3 March) and called for an end to the largest marine mammal hunt in the world, due to start here, likely killing the very seal pups she saw, later this month.

Fianna Fail MEP Sean O’Neachtain has come under fire this week for his support of Canada’s annual seal hunt. He, along with every other Irish MEP had previously signed a Written Declaration in the European Parliament calling for an import and trade ban on all seal products but following a visit to Canada and meetings with officials there claims to have seen “the other side of the story”.
