The Design Against Fur at dreamspace exhibition will run Monday 15 - Friday 19 September, 0900 - 1730 daily at dreamspace gallery, 1-3 Dufferin Street, London EC1Y 8NA and entry is free of charge.

ANTI-SEALING GROUPS WELCOME GOVERNMENT CALL FOR URGENT EUROPEAN BAN ON SEAL IMPORTS

Respect for Animals warmly welcome the Ministerial Statement made today by Minister of Trade, Investment and Foreign Affairs (Ian McCartney) that said the UK would be pressing the European Commission to propose EU-wide measures to ban the import of harp and hooded seal products.

The European Commission and the Canadian Seal Hunt

Despite some press reports in the Canadian media, the EU Commission response does lay the groundwork for introducing legislation to ban seal products. It recognizes there is substantial evidence that the commercial seal hunt in Canada is not acceptably humane. The Commission clearly does not accept Canadian government assurances that the seal hunt is conducted in a humane fashion, and has committed to undertake its own impartial study and come back with possible legislative proposals.

European Commission announce that cruel trade in cat and dog fur is to be banned

After many years of campaigning for a European ban on the import and trade in cat and dog fur, Respect for Animals is delighted with today’s announcement by the Commission. The fur is mainly produced in China and has been found for sale in many countries throughout the EU; recent investigations show the furs may also be produced within the EU.

COUNCIL OF EUROPE CALLS FOR MEMBER STATES TO BAN SEAL IMPORTS

Earlier today, the Council of Europe meeting in San Marino passed a recommendation concerning seal hunting which included calls to end all cruel hunting methods (such as the hakapik) and that members and observers should ‘promote initiatives aimed at prohibiting the import and marketing of seal-derived products.’
