Horst Seehofer the German Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection has today announced that Germany will move forward with plans to implement a national ban on the import of all seal products.

Respect for Animals warmly welcome the Ministerial Statement made today by Minister of Trade, Investment and Foreign Affairs (Ian McCartney) that said the UK would be pressing the European Commission to propose EU-wide measures to ban the import of harp and hooded seal products.

Despite some press reports in the Canadian media, the EU Commission response does lay the groundwork for introducing legislation to ban seal products. It recognizes there is substantial evidence that the commercial seal hunt in Canada is not acceptably humane. The Commission clearly does not accept Canadian government assurances that the seal hunt is conducted in a humane fashion, and has committed to undertake its own impartial study and come back with possible legislative proposals.

After many years of campaigning for a European ban on the import and trade in cat and dog fur, Respect for Animals is delighted with today’s announcement by the Commission. The fur is mainly produced in China and has been found for sale in many countries throughout the EU; recent investigations show the furs may also be produced within the EU.
