Today (Tuesday 1 July) activists from across Europe met in Brussels for a mass rally in support of a European Union ban on the seal product trade. An announcement on the trade is expected from the European Commission later this month.
A video statement from Paul McCartney was broadcast at the rally.

The trial of the five observers charged with breaching regulations at the 2006 seal hunt ended today with judgement being reserved until 24 October 2008.

During the second day of the trial, Judge Jean-Paul Decoste refused to hear testimony from a world-renowned forensic video expert. Despite allowing the video into evidence yesterday, today the judge ruled that expert testimony to the effect the video scientifically proved that the accused were outside the 10m limit, would not alter the outcome of the case and therefore refused to let the expert, Grant Fredericks testify.

The charges relate to technical violations of Canada’s Fisheries Act during the 2006 commercial hunt.

The Canadian seal hunt - the largest slaughter of marine mammals in the world - got underway in the Gulf of St Lawrence, Canada, today (Friday 28 March) as animal welfare campaigners looked to the European Commission to act swiftly and decisively to help put an end the annual slaughter of hundreds of thousands of seal pups.
