EU Brings in Fur Labelling for Clothing

(12 May 2011) Garments on sale in the EU will soon have to state if they contain any real fur or leather.

The European parliament has approved a new EU regulation to give shoppers more information about the composition of textiles.

Clothing trimmed with or containing any fur or leather will be labelled with the phrase "contains non-textile parts of animal origin".

Manufacturers have two-and-a-half years to switch to the new labels.

Mark Glover of Respect for Animals welcomed the decision: "This new label will help shoppers to make an informed decision and avoid buying fur unintentionally.  Currently, it is down to the consumer to decide if fur on sale is real or fake which can be very difficult as some fake furs are very realistic and price is not necessarily an indicator."
